"Etude No. 1" is a study in minimum repetition of melodic and rhythmic elements. The goal was to compose a song that began and ended with an established theme, but the middle section was to be a continuously changing flow of melodic passages and rhythmic exploration. Every measure is something different.
The ideas of "Etude No. 1" led to deeper thought, inspiration, and focus for creating "In Stride". It is a musical self-portrait — a culmination of my life, learning, and outlook (at the time, in 2007). It took about a year to get it out of me, and get it right. Most of the acoustic guitar phrasing and all of the solos were improvisations. The programmed drum/percussion elements were the only fully-planned part of the song. Once I captured the single take that expressed my thoughts and feelings best, I went back through to learn what I improvised so I could apply multi-part harmonies and fretless bass.
